If you’ve spoken with me about web design in the last couple of years, or read any of my emails and blog posts, then you probably already know I strongly advise small business owners to consider upgrading to a responsive web design framework. “Responsive” means that your website displays correctly on smaller screens, like the ones you’ll find on an iPhone, Kindle, or an Android.

Despite the fact that I’m almost practically hollering the suggestion from the mountain tops, I still talk to owners and marketers who are reluctant to make the switch. Some of them don’t really understand the concept, while others feel mobile compatibility for their website isn’t a big enough priority.

While I can empathize with those points of view, I think they are missing the bigger trend and picture. Today I want to give you a few of the reasons why responsive web design gives such a big value to small businesses…

Mobile Computing is Even Bigger Than You Think

Industry analysts say that more than 50% of all web users are now accessing the Internet through mobile devices. They predict that the proportion will grow to two-thirds within the next half decade. So, if you haven’t already upgraded your website to a responsive design, know that the market is probably even bigger than you think it is.

It’s Hard to Market Without Mobile

denver-responsive-web-designGoogle started incorporating mobile compatibility into its search results last year. Likewise, Facebook recently announced that its algorithms would factor mobile functionality into its ads and news feeds going forward. Even if you don’t advertise or promote your business through these channels, you’re probably still getting traffic to your website that originates from search engines and social sites. That’s going to be harder going forward if you don’t have a responsive website.

Your Customers Want Mobile-Ready Websites

The statistics and notes about algorithm changes I’ve provided are one thing, but if you really want to get to the root of the issue look at your customers themselves. Chances are, the buyers coming in and out of your store (or contacting you on the phone, etc.) are using mobile devices on a daily basis. You probably are, too. Why not give them what they want and make your web presence compatible with their favorite gadgets?

Put all of these details together, and you will come to the conclusion that there’s no reason to put off mobile functionality any longer. If you want to do what’s best for your customers, your business, and your bottom line, there’s really no better choice.
